mantra makes an entry to finnish proform series with his raw and uncompromised four track acid ep called “the abyss”. after releases on bunker records, polybius trax, solar one music and abstract acid under the mantra alias craig stainton delivers four tracks of jackin pure acid techno madness in the veins of true underground. starting with “next culture” is a good introduction to pumping beats and a moaning 303 while “beat methods” takes a rougher and tougher angle to acid. just imagine yourself in a warehouse party in the morning jammin to some acid. on the b-side “the abyss” leads us to the deep end of the 303 or even to the bottom of the acid sea. “singularity” ends this package with great 303 lines definitely burning up the house! a limited and numbered edition of 200, after that it’s gone, no represses, no digital, so you know what to do!
classic norken/delsin ep from 2000 repressed. original release text: lee norris became known with his releases as metamatics, through the now defunct clear-label and is running his label neo ouija nowadays. this ep hosts four tracks continuing the style of his previous norken releases. four tracks consisting of very soulful sounds and smooth melodies together with more forward beats or more sophisticated break beats. best to be compared with music from artists like by john beltran, carl craig and his own metamatics of course. beautiful things!
following the late night swing of javonntte’s hm002, hardmatter uncovers another detroit talent for their third offering: malik alston. in his first vinyl release in several years, the rebirth ep explores a spiritual jazz soundscape with all of the verve of the city’s trusted sound. beside the soulful ballad of “love changes” featuring evan on guitar, the record’s lead song, “i am”, focuses on malik’s signature instrumentation and live improvisation. the track is a seven minute collaboration between craig huckaby, howard wazeerud-din ii and hardmatterís own zapata, who complement malik’s gospel-inspired vocals, the first time he has sung on a track in four years.

for the first in a series of reinterpretations of material from linkwood s superb expressions album, firecracker recordings has turned to chicago deep house veterans ghosts of the sky (aka perpetual rhythms chicagodeep and taelue), and fast-rising machine abusers nummer. the latter dive into an aquatic techno tip, turning the becalmed and melancholic love lost into a techno-tempo stroll through vintage carl craig chords, sweaty machine percussion, and yearning melodies. theres a warmer and heavier, if surprisingly stripped back, feel to ghosts of the sky s version of object, with spluttering electronics and sumptuous chords stretching out over a rich synth bassline and hissing, cymbal-heavy groove.
derek s music instantly takes the listener on a midnight drive, cruising the grand river avenue through detroit. derek carr s ability to create soulful melodies that effortlessly wrap themselves around bouncy basslines and elegant beats is not only classy – it s classical. derek carr is not from the detroit though.. he s an irishman through and through, born and bred in westmeath, about 3400 miles from the state of michigan. yet he absolutely nails it! after two decades of crafting his own sound with analogue synths and samplers with the music culture of motor city as an inspiration, derek carr doesn t sound like anyone else. all the archetypical detroit sounds are there – from the robotic bleeps in binary systems to the moody strings of metro city – but derek carr uses them to create a primarily club oriented vibe, uplifting and positive.

for phonicas landmark 20th release on the main label we go back to a classic from the same year the shop opened stereofuses casino ep, originally released on berlin label salo in 2003. the casino ep marked the first collaboration between martin wörner & thorsten diegel as stereofuse. they followed it up with a string of other 12inches for other labels but its this initial 12inch that has been fetching high prices second-hand as one of the most sought after releases on salo and for very good reason. a timeless ep sitting somewhere between house and techno (before tech-house became a disputed tag-line!) with the likes of ricardo villalobos & craig richards playing it regularly in their sets.
2018 repress - bicep make their way home to feel my bicep records for their first 12” on the imprint since their collaborative ‘dahlia’, recorded with hammer, back in september of 2015. fmb006 is a notable addition to the label - a reimagining of blaze’s seminal recording ‘lovelee dae’ - originally released on classic back in 1997, before a string of subsequent re-issues and remix packages on playhouse, true and urban tracks that included carl craig and 20:20 vision. the remix was originally designed to be included in their essential mix in 2014, but a lack of space has meant that its pressing on fmb is the first time it sees the light of day. using ralph lawson and carl finlow’s classic aforementioned acapella version as the basis of their work, the bicep lads ensnare an air of swooning euphoria in their remix that stays true to both their original productions and their dj sets. shortened vocals suffuse galloping 909s and a gleaming synth riff that certify it as a festival fail safe
